Drinking can be beneficial and harmful

The dangers of drinking are well known. Excessive alcohol use can lead to numerous health issues, including damage to the heart, cirrhosis of the liver, brain damage, and other ailments. Drinking can also be socially and emotionally disadvantageous – physical and emotional abuse are often linked to alcohol, and families and friendships can be destroyed by the substance, especially when the drinker becomes addicted. Finally, a number of social problems can stem from the overuse of alcohol, including economic depression, disorderly conduct, and DWIs.

However, despite the negative reputation of alcohol, consuming beer and wine in moderate quantities can actually yield benefits to individuals and communities. One obvious benefit is social – it’s easier for people to loosen up and have a good time if they imbibe some ‘social lubricant.’ The potential health benefits of alcohol may be even more profound: recent studies have suggested that one alcoholic drink per day can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Other scientific studies have indicated that alcohol can lower risks for diabetes and gallstones. Of course, none of the evidence for these claims is definitive, and some people may still react negatively to alcohol. Overall, alcoholic beverages can be wonderful for body, mind, and spirit – in moderation, of course.
